Cradling the apple of his eyes,Jihad Mashawari holds his son for the last time. The BBC Arabic picture editor’s 11 month old son became a victim of the never ending conflict.

Wrapped in a white cloth, baby Omar was injured by an Israeli air strike and pronounced dead when rushed to the hospital.

The BBC Arabic editors strong but few words were ‘What did my son do to die like this?,’ he pleaded, ‘What was his mistake? He is 11 months-old, what did he do?’

Headlines such as “Rocket fired at tel-Aviv” were breaking news, but “Son of BBC Arabic man killed in airstrike” was no where near the front page. Hundreds of rockets have been thrown into Gaza since the ‘Open War’ began.
