Massively acclaimed horror franchise “Evil Dead” is all set for a comeback after forty whole years as “Evil Dead Rise”, a sequel film to the original decades’ old trilogy is in works for HBO Max. Starring Alyssa Sutherland & Lily Sullivan as centrals, the movie is being executive produced by the Evil Dead mastermind pair Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell.
The critical success of 90s, The Evil Dead trilogy remains the topnotch and fan favorite horror thriller to date, owing to its classical, spine-tingling plots and timeline. Brought forward under the banner of Newline Cinema, the three originals, titled The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness were all written and directed by Sam Raimi, and starred Bruce Campbell as titular protagonist Ash Williams. The series had garnered immense viewership, and became one of the major box office knockouts then.
Moreover, to continue the Evil Dead legacy, the franchise was revived at Sony in 2013 with a soft reboot “Evil Dead,” directed by Fede Alvarez. Likewise, Raimi, Campbell and Taperthad produced that film. However, it was the first to not star Campbell as Ash.
Other than that, a television series called “Ash vs. Evil Dead” was also launched in 2015 and ran for three years. This time, Bruce Campbell had reprised his signature role.
And, forty years subsequent to the first installment, the Evil Dead franchise is once again rising from ashes. As said by Newline Cinema, a flower fresh sequel to the original trilogy, named ‘Evil Dead Rise’ is in the pipeline at HBO Max.
The next chapter, Evil Dead Rise will kick in from the original trilogy, rather than the 2013 reboot and moves the action out of the woods and into the city.
The timeline centers on two estranged sisters portrayed by Alyssa Sutherland & Lily Sullivan, whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.
Hence, just like the previous titles, loads of blood-curling plots and spooky turn of events is expected.
Talking about the renewal of his chartbuster franchise, Sam Raimi commented, “I’m thrilled to bring Evil Dead back to its original home at New Line 40 years after the release of the first film. The company’s history as pioneers of horror speaks for itself. I’m equally excited to be working with Lee Cronin, whose gifts as a storyteller make him the ideal filmmaker to continue the enduring legacy of the franchise.”
“At its core, Evil Dead is about ordinary people overcoming extraordinarily terrifying situations, I can’t wait for Alyssa and Lily to fill the blood-soaked shoes of those who have come before them and carry on that tradition,” Bruce Campbell, who will serve as EP alongside Raimi added.
Furthermore, Newline Cinema that has a history of spine-tingling horror titles like ‘Conjuring’ and ‘It’ to its name, also shared the two cents about the Evil Dead Rise. Richard Brener, President and Chief Creative Officer, New Line Cinema stated,
“New Line has a proud history of involvement in some of the most influential and enduring horror films of all time, and the original The Evil Dead was a landmark moment for the Studio. The movie transformed the genre and with each new installment, Sam, Rob and Bruce have continued to raise the bar. It’s exciting to have them back in the fold for Evil Dead Rise after all these years, especially as they bring with them an immense talent in director Lee Cronin. His inventive spirit and his reverence for the franchise make him the perfect director to unleash Evil Dead once again.”
Evil Dead Rise will commence filming in New Zealand in near future. The film will be released on streamers, HBO Max in the U.S., Canal Plus in the U.K. and Metropolitan in France.
