The government of Azad Kashmir (AJK) has sanctioned a decrease in electricity tariff and flour prices following mass protests in the valley.

According to reports, the AJK government has acceded to the demands put forth by the Jammu Kashmir Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and has slashed the prices of electricity and flour.

A notification released in Rawalakot states that the price of wheat flour has been reduced by Rs 1100 per 40 kg bag, now standing at Rs 2000 as opposed to the previous Rs 3100.

Furthermore, the government has given the green light to lower electricity rates.

As per the notification, residential consumers using up to 100 units will be billed at Rs 3 per unit, while those consuming between 101-300 units will be charged at Rs 5 per unit. Consumers exceeding 300 units will face a tariff of Rs 6 per unit.

For commercial consumers utilizing up to 300 units, the rate will be Rs 10 per unit, whereas those utilizing over 300 units will be charged at Rs 15 per unit.

Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir, Chaudhry Anwar ul Haq, addressed a press conference stating that PM Shehbaz assured him of resolving the flour crisis within 24 hours. He acknowledged the public’s concerns and emphasized the government’s commitment to democracy and peaceful protest.

Despite clashes resulting in injuries and a fatality among police personnel, the government is dedicated to addressing issues and engaging with protest leaders. The government also discussed receiving wheat from the federal government and efforts to prevent wheat smuggling.

Earlier, PM Shehbaz approved funds to alleviate problems in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, addressing the situation in a special meeting in Islamabad attended by top political figures.

The protests in AJK led to clashes, resulting in casualties and property damage, prompting widespread closures across the territory.
