BISP to Reinstate Names of Beneficiaries Disqualified by Ehsaas Program

The newly appointed Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Security, Shazia Marri, said that Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) will reinstate names of beneficiaries, who were disqualified by Ehsaas Program to receive stipend of Rs. 14,000 under the Ehsaas Kafalat Program.

“The names of those BISP beneficiaries who were declared ineligible to receive cash assistance on the basis of several different factors during the previous government’s tenure would be reviewed and efforts will be made to reinstate them into the programme” said Shazia Marri in a video statement. Furthermore, she requested these people to submit their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) number by sending an SMS to 8171.

According to Dr Sania Nishtar, who served as the Special Assistant to Former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Poverty Alleviation and Social Security, said that 820,165 households were barred from receiving cash assistance under the Ehsaas Kafalat Program for several reasons.

This list included the names of individuals who are government employees, taxpayers, car owners, and people who have travelled abroad. It is pertinent to mention that the move was made to ensure that only the most deserving people are included in the Ehsaas Kafalat Program.

Ehsaas Program to be Renamed as BISP

It is pertinent to mention that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had announced to rename the Ehsaas Kafalat Program back to the original Benazir Income Support Program (BISP). The announcement was made during this first address as Prime Minister of Pakistan at the National Assembly.
