IHC Orders Immediate Release of PTI Leader Shireen Mazari

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ordered the immediate release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shireen Mazari and directed the Federal Government to hold a judicial inquiry into her arrest on Saturday.

Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), Athar Minallah, conducted the hearing regarding the arrest of PTI leader Shireen Mazari. The high court directed authorities to immediately release the PTI leader and ordered the government to form a judicial commission to probe into her detention.

The court also directed the federal government to present terms of reference (TORs) for the judicial commission before the IHC, while declaring the arrest as an illegal act. It is pertinent to mention that PTI leader Shireen Mazari had been produced before the court amid tight security.

Shireen Mazari was arrested from outside her residence by officials of Anti-Corruption Punjab and Islamabad Police. The video of her arrest showed the former minister being dragged by female police officers. The ex-minister told media that her mobile phone was being tracked and four women police officials ‘attacked’ her, while an Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) officer namely Ammar had tortured her and she was taken to Lahore in a white-colored vehicle.

According to Shireen Mazari, this was a case of enforced disappearance.

It bears mentioning that Shireen Mazari was confiscated of her mobile phone but it was being used by someone afterwards as well. According to reports, the mobile phone was being used until 4:07PM, a few hours after her arrest. The development came from Azhar Mashwani.
