President Arif Alvi on Tuesday signed the summary and approved the appointment of Lieutenant (Lt) General Asim Munir as the next Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Lieutenant (Lt) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).
Earlier today, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had decided to appoint Lt Gen Asim Munir as the next Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) but there was uncertainty surrounding the appointment of the key military positions, which ended as the president approved the summary.
Prior to the approval, President Arif Alvi held a meeting with Former President and Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan at Zaman Park in Lahore.
The announcement was made by Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Twitter. “The Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has decided to appoint Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir as the Chief of the Army Staff using the constitutional authority.” she tweeted.

Lt Gen Asim Munir will replace General Qamar Javed Bajwa as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) on November 29, while Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza will be taking charge as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) replacing Lt Gen Nadeem Raza, who is retiring on November 27, 2022.
Who is Lt General Asim Munir?
Lt General Asim Munir, who will take on one of the most important positions after his promotion to the rank of four-star General, is the senior most officer after the outgoing Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa and currently serves as Quartermaster General in the Pakistan Army.
He has served as DG of the Military Intelligence in early 2017 and then ISI Director General in October 2018. It bears mentioning that he will be the first Army Chief to have held these important positions prior to his promotion to four-star General. Furthermore, he is the recipient of the Sword of Honor from the 17th course of the Officers Training School in Mangla.
Additionally, he has also received Hilal-i-Imtiaz.

Who is Lt General Sahir Shamshad Mirza?
Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza is a three-star General in the Pakistan Army and serves as the Commander for Rawalpindi Corps. He has also served in senior leadership positions, including Director-General (DG) Military Operations (DGMO), Chief of General Staff, and Adjutant General at the General Headquarters.
He is also the recipient of Hilala-e-Imtiaz (Military).
