Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lawmaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has been elected the 22nd Speaker of the National Assembly unopposed as no other candidate submitted the nomination for the position against him. Pervaiz Ashraf, who has previously served as the Prime Minister, was administered the oath by PML-N’s Ayaz Sadiq.
It is pertinent to mention that Asad Qaiser had tendered his resignation from the position of NA Speaker minutes before the voting on the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Furthermore, the NA Deputy Speaker, Qasim Suri had also resigned from his post ahead of the no-trust motion.
Raja Pervaiz Ashraf made a brief speech after assuming office of the NA Speaker and thanked the party leaders, the Prime Minister, and the members of the National Assembly.
It is pertinent to mention here that the National Assembly session, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday, had been rescheduled for April 22. The schedule was changed by then acting speaker Qasim Suri under the National Assembly rules.
“Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has been elected unopposed as the 22nd Speaker of the 15th National Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.” said the National Assembly of Pakistan Official Twitter handle.
