KARACHI: The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet today for Ramazan moon sighting in Karachi under chairman Mufti Muneeb ur Rehman according to the spokesperson of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
Other Zonal and District Committees will also meet simultaneously including the Islamabad Committee which will meet at the Kohsar Complex according to the spokesperson.
Although it was said that the Ramazan moon will be sighted on 14 April with the Holy month of Ramazan starting from 25 April however, the moon is likely to be visible today based on images generated by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO).
The Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry confirmed this by saying:
On April 23, the moon will only be 2 degrees above the horizon at sunset; it is impossible to spot the moon during sunset with telescopes. Therefore, if anyone living in Pakistan wants to fast with the people in Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia it is up to them,
However, he ruled out the possibility of sighting the moon in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with a telescope at sunset because of the angle.
Fawad Chaudhry took to Twitter saying that for the first time in the history of Pakistan the Science Ministry had a representation on the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee announcing that Joint Secretary Dr Tariq Masood was appointed as technical expert for the Committee.
The Minister continued in his tweet:
This is a step in the right direction. Religious events and holidays should be a reason for unity instead of division between the people. On this positive note we must progress,
