Peshawar High Court (PHC) Chief Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan heard a plea seeking a ban on TikTok in Pakistan and remarked that the videos and content uploaded on the social media application was “not acceptable for Pakistani society”.

According to the Director General of Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA), the government had contacted TikTok officials several times over removal of immoral content, but did not receive a “positive” response from the app’s management.

Chief Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan then ordered that TikTok should be immediately banned in Pakistan until the company responds to the government’s request regarding removal of objectionable content on the social media application.

TikTok Ban in Pakistan

This is the second time that a ban has been placed on TikTok in Pakistan. The widely used social media application was previously banned across the country in October 2020 after failing to comply with instructions issued by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) regarding moderation of unlawful content being posted on the social media application.

PTA also said that the step was taken after the regulator received several complaints regarding the short video-sharing application from different segments of society over the immoral and indecent content found on the application.

However, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) ended up overturning its decision and removing the TikTok ban in Pakistan after the company responded to the request and said it would moderate and remove all unlawful content being uploaded on the application in the country.
