The Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a weather warning that Karachi is expected to experience exceptionally heavy rainfall during the upcoming monsoon season, with forecasts predicting over a 100% increase in rain between July and August.
The forecast was discussed in a meeting led by Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi, where concerns were raised about the potential for significant damage if the port city’s clogged drainage system is not addressed.
Reports indicate that 550 waste drains are currently blocked, heightening the risk of severe flooding. Commissioner Naqvi emphasized that urgent directives have been issued to relevant authorities to prepare for the heavy rains. He stated, “If heavy rainfall occurs, the potential for major damage is high due to 550 clogged waste drains throughout the city.”
The PDMA stressed the importance of clearing the drains to prevent flooding in low-lying areas. Without these precautions, Karachi faces the threat of severe floods and associated disasters.
In a separate meeting on Friday, Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah reviewed preparations for urban flooding in Karachi. He urged all relevant institutions to collaborate with the Meteorological Department and PDMA to mitigate the risks of heavy rains.
Shah also directed departments to ensure the availability of emergency equipment, including dewatering pumps and field personnel, in response to the challenges posed by the impending monsoon season.
