Sony appears to be exploring innovative features for its upcoming generation of DualSense controllers, aiming to enhance the gaming experience. A recent patent suggests that artificial intelligence (AI) could play a role in assisting players in overcoming challenging aspects of video games.

Currently offering DualSense in a base and Edge (essentially Pro) variant, Sony’s potential next-gen DualSense controller, hinted at by the patent filing, is expected to bring significant changes. Notably, the touchpad is transformed into a display, representing a more substantial modification to the existing design.
The key innovation lies in the incorporation of a robust machine learning and AI-based system. The redesigned DualSense leverages the touchpad’s display to guide players by presenting button prompts for the most effective actions. In tandem with this, the buttons, including sticks and triggers, are designed to illuminate, providing visual cues for recommended inputs during challenging segments of the game.
In theory, this feature could assist players in overcoming tough bosses, solving intricate puzzles, and navigating difficult areas. Beyond enhancing gameplay, there’s potential for this feature to make games more accessible for inexperienced players or individuals with specific disabilities. However, it’s crucial for this feature to be optional by default, as constant prompts may prove frustrating, especially if the AI model isn’t perfectly trained and suggests incorrect actions.
