Samsung and Preferred Networks Forge Alliance for 2nm AI Chip Development

Samsung has struck a significant deal with Preferred Networks (PFN), a notable player in artificial intelligence (AI), signaling a shift in chip manufacturing from TSMC to Samsung. While the move surprised many, the impact remains uncertain. The agreement comes amid advancements in chip production, with Samsung currently focusing on 3nm chips and progressing towards the 2nm process.

PFN’s collaboration with Samsung marks preparations for the development of the first 2nm AI chips. Although the performance of Samsung’s 2nm manufacturing technique is yet to be determined, the company’s continuous improvement efforts are evident. The reasons behind PFN’s switch from TSMC to Samsung remain undisclosed, possibly influenced by competitive pricing offers from Samsung.

While Samsung typically trails TSMC in performance and efficiency, efforts to implement the 2nm GAA (Gate-All-Around) technology are underway, aiming for successful outcomes. Anticipation surrounds enhancements in the Exynos SOC for smartphones, particularly the awaited performance results of the Exynos 2500, rumored to feature a 10-core structure and potentially ARM’s Cortex-X5 core.
