YouTube announced it was running a “small experiment” globally that urged some users with an ad-blocker to disable them if they want to view content on the platform. However, this is no longer a “small experiment” as YouTube says that it’s launching a global crack down on ad blockers and encourage users to either allow ads or buy YouTube Premium.
The information comes directly from YouTube’s communication manager, Christopher Lawton. When you encounter the YouTube’s ad-block message as shown in the screenshot, you’re allowed two options that include “Allow YouTube Ads” and “Try YouTube Premium”.
Furthermore, there is a message that clearly states, “Video playback is blocked unless YouTube is allow listed or the ad blocker is disabled.” However, the message currently has a cross (x) on the upper right corner, which is likely to be removed to enforce the new rule.
According to Lawton, using ad-blockers on YouTube violate the platform’s terms of service. “Ads support a diverse ecosystem of creators globally and allow billions to access their favorite content on YouTube.” he said.
