A massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coasts of Chile and Argentina on Friday, May 2, 2025, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The epicenter was located approximately 219 kilometers south of Ushuaia, Argentina, beneath the ocean.
In response to the seismic event, Chilean authorities issued a tsunami alert and ordered evacuations along the coastal areas of the Magallanes region and the Chilean Antarctic territory. President Gabriel Boric assured the public that all necessary resources are being mobilized and urged citizens to follow evacuation orders and remain vigilant.
Despite the earthquake’s strength, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The region is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, known for its high seismic activity. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have advised residents to stay informed through official channels.
