In yet another incident targeting Muslim students wearing hijab in India, a video showing a Muslim girl being harassed by extremists with saffron scarfs went viral on social media causing outrage amongst many people over the treatment of Muslim students in India’s Karnataka.
Hundreds of male students and outsiders wearing saffron scarfs raised slogans against a Muslim girl donning a hijab at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College (MGM) in Udupi, a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. In the viral video, the Muslim girl could be seen riding her bike to the institute, where she was met by an extremist mob chanting slogans of “Jai Shri Ram,” while the hijab wearing student countered with, “Allahu Akbar,”
However, the situation was handled by college authorities, who were seen keeping the two factions away from each other, but the entire incident was filmed and went viral on social media sparking outrage amongst the masses for the treatment of minorities in India.
It is pertinent to mention that several schools and colleges in India’s Karnataka have denied Muslim girls from wearing hijab if they want to enter the classrooms or campus, under the guise of uniformity and classroom order. However, there are many prominent figures raising serious concerns over the Narendra Modi led Hindutva Government, whose policies have caused a massive divide amongst religious groups in Indian society.
There are many people sharing the video of the Muslim girl wearing a hijab being harassed by dozens of people (students as well as outsiders) with saffron scarfs as she parks her motorcycle at the college. The matter has been trending on social media with hashtag #AllahuAkbar and #HijabRow as people express their opinion on what’s happening in the Indian state of Karnataka.
