The introduction of AI technology in controlling the traffic signals will considerably ease congestion on Sharjah roads. The Sharjah’s Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has announced that it will introduce 48 AI-powered traffic signals, which are set to improve the flow of traffic by no less than a staggering thirty percent.
These signals will be integrated with sensors and cameras that analyze the real-time traffic situation, enabling changing of signal cycles dynamically. Mr. Yousif Alathmani, Chairman of the SRTA stated that the length of green and red lights will be either lengthened or shortened according to the current traffic flow levels and patterns. The AI system will be self-learning and self-adjusting, with regular updates to maintain peak form.
In 2023, the SRTA completed two projects on Ittihad Road and Al Taawun area to reduce traffic congestion between Sharjah and Dubai.
Recent trends also point to the strategic partnership between SRTA and BEEAH which is aimed at improving EV charging facilities throughout the emirate. The grandiose project envisages installing several charging stations along the highways and in different districts, which would also cover central commercial and urban areas. This initiative is likely to complement the ongoing sustainability efforts in Sharjah.
