The total number of casualties from the massive earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have risen to more than 5,000 people, with hundreds injured and still trapped under rubble of collapsed buildings.
Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has announced a three-month emergency across 10 provinces worst affected by Monday’s earthquakes.
He added that total death toll from the earthquakes centered in southeastern Turkiye has risen to 3,549, which reach a total of 5,000 dead when coupled with casualties in neighboring Syria.
It is pertinent to mention that a 7.8 magnitude earthquake jolted Turkiye and Syria on Monday, which was followed by several aftershocks and another massive 7.5 magnitude earthquake 12 hours later.
The earthquakes caused massive damaged across southeastern Turkiye and Syria, killing thousands of people, while hundreds are injured and many are still awaiting rescue.
Many historical monuments in Turkiye and Syria that have survived wars and natural disasters in the past have also been destroyed, or damaged, by yesterday’s deadly earthquakes.
According to Turkey’s Government, the earthquakes have destroyed more than 5,600 buildings across the affected provinces.
Turkey’s Iskenderun Port has also been damaged from the massive quakes and hundreds of shipping containers are still ablaze, sending thick black smoke into the sky.
The operations at the port have been shut down and freight liners are diverting vessels to other ports.
There have been unsuccessful attempts to put the fire out.
Meanwhile, countries around the world have offered support to Turkiye and Syria during this difficult time and pledged to help the country to the best of their ability.
Several countries have sent search and rescue teams along with necessary equipment and relief goods.
