New ‘BTS Law’ allows K-Pop stars to defer Military Service

South Korea’s National Assembly just introduced the ‘BTS Law’ which is basically revision to its Military Service Act allowing for male K-pop stars to postpone their mandatory military service until they turn 30.

Previously, all able bodied South Korean men were required to serve in the military for about 20 months between the ages of 18 and 28 in order to protect the country from neighboring North Korea.

The new ‘BTS Law’ comes just days before the K-pop band’s Kim Seok-jin turns 28, giving him an early birthday gift which allows him to postpone his mandatory military service until 30.

Similar relaxations have already been in place for South Korean athletes for decades. According to these rules, that athletes who win medals at Olympics or Asian Games are spared from military service, as their achievements are seen as bringing national prestige.

Furthermore, some classical and folk musicians are also exempted from serving on the basis that they win certain awards.

This is certainly a special day for fans as the ‘BTS Law’ will allow their favorite K-pop band to perform together for another 2 years as Kim Seok-jin doesn’t need to serve for another two years.
