AMD has announced the details for its next gen AM5 Socket, which is based on the Land Grid Array (LGA) standard with 1718 pins for the upcoming Ryzen 7000 series CPUs (seems like AMD is once again skipping the Ryzen 6000 series for Desktop CPUs and reserving it for mobile chips with Zen3+ Architecture).

However, it doesn’t mean the end of the current AM4 Socket as the company has also announced an upcoming CPU based on the current generation socket, the Ryzen 5800X3D and AMD might also reveal 5900X3D and 5950X3D in the coming months.

Furthermore, the AM5 Socket will retain is compatibility with the AM4 cooler so people won’t have to go out buying a brand new cooler if they decide to upgrade to the AMD AM4 Socket with the new Ryzen 7000 series CPUs. This will avoid a situation like Intel’s LGA 1200/115X coolers which required an adapter to use with the current LGA 1700 socket.

It bears mentioning that AM5 Socket will bring compatibility with PCI-e Gen 5 and DDR5 Memory with the company’s new Ryzen 7000 series chips that will compete with Intel’s recently launched 12th Generation Core Processors.

AMD introduced the AM4 Socket back in 2016, prior to the release of the Gen 1 Ryzen Chips (ZEN 1 Architecture) and the company has so far retained the same socket for their ZEN 3 Architecture, which has allowed people to upgrade their processors without needing to get a new motherboard (depending on compatibility by their motherboard manufacturer).

However, the current AM4 socket will allow for one more upgrade with the upcoming Ryzen 5800X3D, which is the first processor to use the stacked memory technology within its package. The new chip features AMD’s new 3D V-Cache technology that packs 96MB of L3 Cache onto to a single processor through 3D-stacked SRAM.

This will help boost gaming performance by an average of 15% across several titles at 1080p. AMD has claimed that the Ryzen 5800X3D will be the fastest gaming chip in the world, beating Intel’s 12900K despite the chip using DDR4 with the current AMD AM4 Socket. The new chip will be available by Spring of 2022.
