Education Ministers Meeting to Discuss Schools Closure Postponed

The meeting of the Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC) to discuss the closure of schools amid surge in coronavirus cases has been postponed by the Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood until next week. The announcement was made shortly before the meeting of the Education Ministers was scheduled to start at 11am on Wednesday.

Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mehmood alongside all other provincial Education Ministers were to decide whether the current surge in coronavirus cases warrants the closing of schools in the country in order to contain the spread of the deadly virus.

In a notification issued by the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, the meeting of the Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC) has been delayed until next week without any reason whatsoever, despite the constant surge in the Omicron variant in major cities, including Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.

In the last 24 hours, Pakistan has reported more than 3,000 coronavirus cases, which is the highest since 15 September 2021. The data was released by the National Command and Operations Center (NCOC) as part of their daily update to the coronavirus situation in the country.

Statistics 13 Jan 22:
Total Tests in Last 24 Hours: 49,270
Positive Cases: 3019
Positivity %: 6.12%
Deaths :5
Patients on Critical Care: 651

It is pertinent to mention that Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday said Pakistan would not undergo another lockdown and dismissed reports of closure of schools amid rising coronavirus cases. He added that the Federal Government was aware of the rising COVID-19 ratio but another lockdown of closing of schools was not going to happen.
