Samsung might be pushing the limit with Android OS updates as the company is reportedly upgrading its policy. Previously, the company had extended software updates from two to three years, however, a new leak suggests that Samsung maybe extending Android OS updates up to four years.
According to a report by SamMobile, the South Korean tech giant, Samsung, is planning on offering four major Android OS updates and up to five years of security patches for new smartphones. The report suggests that several devices will be eligible for the updated policy, including Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, Galaxy S21 Ultra, Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy S22 series, as well as the Galaxy Tab S8 series, and the latest foldable phones, which include the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3.
This implies that Galaxy S22 series and Galaxy Tab S8 lineup that are expected to ship with Android 12 will officially receive Android OS updates will Android 16 and security patches for additional year as well. The new Android OS updates policy by Samsung will greatly extend the overall life of Galaxy smartphones, which makes it more appealing to the customers and it will increase competition with Pixel smartphones, which are known for their longevity when it comes to software updates.
Currently, Google is offering four years of Android OS updates and five years of security patches on the Pixel 6, and Pixel 6 Pro. This puts Samsung and Google side by side when it comes to software support for their smartphones, and it may soon become a new standard as others might follow in order to compete with these two giants.
