The announcement comes against the backdrop of an ongoing semiconductor chip shortage and global supply chain issues, with chipmakers struggling to keep up with unprecedented demand. Intel has already warned that chip shortage could last until 2023.

Intel Arc GPUs will help the company get a foothold into the market segment, taking on GPU giants AMD and Nvidia. Intel will be playing a long game with the Arc GPUs as the company has confirmed that its GPUs will span “multiple generations,” under the codenames “Battlemage,” “Celestial,” and “Druid.”

The Intel Arc GPUs will include their own supersampling tech – XeSS, which will rival AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution and Nvidia’s DLSS technology. According to Intel, there will be several developers, who will support XeSS and one of the first PC games to support the tech will be the PC version of Death Stranding Director’s Cut.

Furthermore, Intel Arc for Workstations will be released in Q3 2022. The release of the Arc GPUs comes at a time when there is unprecedented demand for graphics cards around the globe and both AMD and Nvidia have struggled to keep up with the demand. However, the Intel Arc GPUs may help provide a third option in the market and ease the shortage.
