Twitter has launched a version of its site on the Tor network, which will ultimately provide a better privacy-protected service for users and allow censorship bypass as well. The development was announced by Software Engineer Alec Muffett on behalf of Twitter.

“This is possibly the most important and long-awaited tweet that I’ve ever composed.” said Muffett on Twitter, while sharing a link to access the Twitter service on the Tor network. Twitter’s onion service can be accessed via https://twitter3e4tixl4xyajtrzo62zg5vztmjuricljdp2c5kshju4avyoid.onion while using the Tor Browser or a similar tool.

It bears mentioning that you can already access Twitter using the ordinary URL via Tor, but the newly launched service adds more privacy-protection on top of the already anonymized browsing experience specifically designed and provided on the Tor network.

According to Alec Muffett, the discussion to launch a Tor version of Twitter has been going on since 2014, the same year he helped Facebook launch its onion service, which gets a million users per month through the Tor network.

As for those who are unaware of Tor, which stands for The Onion Router, it encrypts internet traffic and routes it through a series of thousands of servers around the world, offering the users anonymity and freedom from surveillance and censorship designed for the network.
