Unrest In Sweden Over Burning of Holy Quran

There have been massive protests and unrest in Sweden after a far-right group burned a copy of the Holy Quran. The act has outraged the Muslim community. Violence broke out in the city of Malmö in Sweden on late Saturday after the gathering of the Stram Kurs (aka Hard Line) movement led by extremist Rasmus Paludan.

The unrest has caused widespread damage to public and private property with vehicles being set on fire and some protestors throwing stones at the police. According to the details, at least 16 police officers are reported to have been injured in the clashes with counter-demonstrators following the far-right group’s rallies in Sweden, including Stockholm and in the towns of Linköping and Norrkoping.

Sweden’s national police chief Anders Thornberg said demonstrators had shown an indifference to the lives of police officers. “We have seen violent riots before. But this is something else.” he added while talking about the recent unrest in the country.

It is pertinent to mention that it isn’t the first time something like this has happened either. In 2020, protesters set cars on fire and shop fronts were damaged in clashes in Malmö, while Paludan was also jailed for a month for offences, including racisms in Denmark..
