Lt General Asim Munir Chosen As New Pakistan Army Chief

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to choose Lieutenant General Syed Amin Munir as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).

The announcement was made by Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Twitter. “The Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has decided to appoint Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir as the Chief of the Army Staff using the constitutional authority.” she tweeted, adding that a summary has been sent to the President of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi.

According to the details, the names were finalized following a special cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the chair. Speaking to media after the announcement was made, Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, said the advice had been forwarded to President Alvi regarding the new appointments.

Who is Lt General Asim Munir?

Lt General Asim Munir, who will take on one of the most important positions after his promotion to the rank of four-star General, is the senior most officer after the outgoing Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa and currently serves as Quartermaster General in the Pakistan Army.

He has served as DG of the Military Intelligence in early 2017 and then ISI Director General in October 2018. It bears mentioning that he will be the first Army Chief to have held these important positions prior to his promotion to four-star General. Furthermore, he is the recipient of the Sword of Honor from the 17th course of the Officers Training School in Mangla.

Additionally, he has also received Hilal-i-Imtiaz.

Who is Lt General Sahir Shamshad Mirza?

Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza is a three-star General in the Pakistan Army and serves as the Commander for Rawalpindi Corps. He has also served in senior leadership positions, including Director-General (DG) Military Operations (DGMO), Chief of General Staff, and Adjutant General at the General Headquarters.

He is also the recipient of Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military).
