Twitter To Turn Off SMS 2FA For Unpaid Users After March 20

Twitter will be turning off its SMS-based Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for unpaid users after March 20th, 2023. According to the details, Twitter’s SMS-based 2FA will only be available to users subscribed to Twitter Blue.

The development comes several months after Elon Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion and made Twitter Blue, which offers some extra features, available to everyone for a $8.00 a month. As part of this change, Twitter is going to turn off SMS-based Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) from everyone’s account except its Twitter Blue userbase.

However, it doesn’t mean you won’t have any kind of 2FA on your Twitter account. Fortunately, you will be able to set up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for free using an authenticator app like Google Authenticator or Authy.

Furthermore, you will also have the option to use a security key, a physical device that inserts into your computer or syncs to your mobile device when you log in to Twitter.

According to the details, Twitter’s decision to make SMS 2FA a paid feature is because it is the least secure form of authentication. Therefore, the social media giant is trying to steer non-subscribers away from this method of 2FA.

It leaves users vulnerable to an attack known as SIM swapping, which can occur when a malicious is able to use social engineering to convince your network carrier to transfer your phone number to their device.

As a result, they can gain access to your SMS 2FA codes.
