The much-anticipated Fairphone 5 has finally been launched and available for pre-order on the company’s website for only $699 in Matte Black, Sky Blue, or the new Transparent Edition.

The smartphone will start shipping on September 14 on a “first come, first serve” basis, though the Sky Blue version won’t be available until the end of September.

Furthermore, the Fairphone 5 is made from 70% fair and recycled materials and it is built by people being paid a living wage.

The company also offers the option to have your old phone recycled to ensure that it remains eco-friendly.

You can use your phone’s box to ship your old smartphone to the company to have it recycled.

Warranty and Software Support

One of the most refreshing features of the Fairphone 5 is the long warranty and support support, which unlike some companies on the market can make the phone last longer, especially since it is one of most repairable phone in the world.

The Fairphone 5 comes with 5 year warranty and software support until at least 8 years from now. Moreover, if things go to plan and the smartphone becomes a success, the software support may be extended to 10 years.

The smartphone comes with Android 13 out of the box and the company plans to provide at least 5 OS updates.

Easy Repairs

As mentioned above, the Fairphone 5 is one of easiest phone to repair and all you need is a Philips head screwdriver, which allows you to easily replace ten modules yourself without the need to take it to a repair shop.

Specifications

The Fairphone 5 comes with a new 6.46-inches OLED display with 1,224 x 2,700px resolution (20:9), 90Hz refresh rate (the company’s first HRR display) and a peak brightness of 880 nits.

It is also covered with Gorilla Glass 5 with 0.7mm oleophobic coating.

The phone is also equipped with a 50MP selfie camera, which is a Samsung JN1, a 1/2.76” sensor with 0.64µm pixels and support for 4-in-1 binning.

The f/2.45 lens has a 90° FoV, video recording is supported up to 4K @ 30fps.

The main camera on the back has a 50MP Sony IMX800, a 1/1.56” sensor with 1.0µm native pixels and 4-in-1 binning support. The f/1.88 lens has 84° FoV and supports optical image stabilization.

There is also a 117° ultra wide camera, this one has an IMX858 sensor (1/2.51”, 0.7µm). This one has autofocus and can capture macro images at 2.5cm/1in.

Meanwhile, the third module on the back is a Time of Flight sensor.

Fairphone 5 is also equipped with Qualcomm QCM 6490 chipset, an industrial part with long-term software support, which is why the company is able to provide up to 10 years of software support.

In terms of performance, it is comparable to Snapdragon 778G.

The phone comes with only one memory configuration, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage with the option to add a MicroSD card up to 2TB.

On the connectivity front, the Fairphone 5 includes Wi-Fi 6E (6Ghz), Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC and while the 5G modem supports more bands, the company has not announced plans to release the phone in North America.

Battery

The Fairphone 5 comes with a large 4,200 mAh battery, which is easily replaceable by the user since the smartphone has a removable back cover.

The smartphone supports fast charging up to 30W and the company claims it can get to a 50% in just 20 minutes and fully charged battery should last more than a day.

However, there is no wireless charging.

Ports

The smartphone has a USB-C 3.0 port for charging and data transfers and while it would have been nice to see a 3.5mm headphone jack, the company has removed it and it won’t be coming back in the future either.
