There seems to be no relief in sight for poor consumers as electricity tariff is likely to go up by another Rs. 1.83 per unit as Fuel Charge Adjustment (FCA).

According to the details, the former Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) distribution companies (XWDISCOs) have sought National Electric Power Regulatory Authority’s (NEPRA) approval for the collection of an additional charge of Rs. 1.83 per unit from consumers in October.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a plea to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on behalf of all XWDISCOs seeking the aforementioned hike in the electricity tariff.

NEPRA has setup a public hearing for September 23 to review the petition and if the proposed increase is approved by the regulator, it would put a burden of Rs. 25 billion on the consumers who are already struggling to pay their electricity bills.

The petition outlines that in August, the consumers were charges a reference fuel cost of Rs. 6.6457 per unit, while the actual fuel cost incurred was Rs. 8.4747 per unit.
