Have you ever noticed that when someone shares a photo or video with you on WhatsApp for iOS, the quality is not as good as you’d expect, especially with the impressive cameras on iPhones? Well, the good news is that this issue is finally being addressed.
According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has submitted a new stable iOS update (build number 23.24.73) to the App Store. This update allows users to send photos and videos in their original quality as documents, eliminating compression and loss of quality during sharing.
So, when you share images through the app, they will now maintain their original quality instead of being compressed and appearing lower in quality than intended. To use this feature, simply select the Documents option in the share sheet and then choose Photo or Video.
The update is currently rolling out, and if you’re an iOS user, it’s recommended to update your WhatsApp to version 23.24.73 to enjoy this new feature. However, keep in mind that sharing original quality media may use more data from your monthly plan, particularly with large video files.
While WhatsApp has been testing this feature for Android users since September, it has not yet been released to the stable version of the app. Unfortunately, there’s no specified date for when Android users will receive the update. I checked my WhatsApp installation on Android 14 (Pixel 8 Pro), and the latest update does not include this new feature.
In August, WhatsApp introduced the ability to send High Definition (HD)-quality photos, a notable improvement from Standard Definition (SD). Now, with the option to share original quality photos and videos, there’s no compression at all, providing even better quality. If you want your recipients to view your media exactly as it was captured, opt for the original quality option.
