Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has got its iconic ‘bat’ electoral symbol back after Peshawar High Court (PHC) suspended the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) verdict that declared PTI’s intra-party elections ‘unlawful’.
It bears mentioning that ECP had declared PTI’s intra-party elections illegal on December 2, which was the third party since last year. As a result, the PTI was deemed ineligible to use its traditional electoral symbol, the ‘bat.’
In its ruling, the ECP stated that as per Elections Act 2017, PTI had failed to adhere to their directives as outlined in the order dated November 23, 2023. The party did not conduct intra-party elections in accordance with the prevailing PTI Constitution of 2019, the Elections Act 2017, and Election Rules of 2017. Consequently, the certificate dated December 4, 2023, and Form-65 filed by the alleged chairman were rejected.
However, PTI challenged the ECP verdict in the Peshawar High Court (PHC).
