Xiaomi has entered the forefront of mobile photography with its introduction of the first 1-inch camera sensor among smartphone manufacturers, a significant stride in partnership with Leica. This collaboration has not only enhanced camera hardware but also led to the establishment of an optical institute aimed at designing ultra-precision optical lenses and advancing computational photography.
The newly formed optical institute, jointly developed by Xiaomi and Leica, aims to uphold stringent optical standards while integrating cutting-edge optoelectronic technology. Key figures from both companies, including Peter Karbe from Leica and Zeng Xuezong from Xiaomi, are involved in the institute’s establishment. Three major laboratories are planned in Beijing, focusing on Camera Hardware, Imaging, and Objective and Subjective Image Quality Evaluation.
While Xiaomi’s current flagship, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, boasts a powerful camera setup, anticipation surrounds the upcoming Xiaomi 14 Ultra, expected to elevate mobile photography further. With Xiaomi’s commitment to advancing camera technology evident, the institute underscores its dedication to pushing the boundaries of mobile photography.
