UAE to Ban Popular Food Preservative

The UAE might soon ban hydrogenated oils, a popular food preservative, which food makers use to keep food fresh longer, based on discussions in the Federal National Council (FNC). Dr. Amna Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, highlighted health risks linked with these oils during an FNC session. The National Committee for Food Safety has partly agreed on the ban.

Before enforcing the ban, the ministry will allow a grace period for food businesses to meet certain standards. They’ll also supervise the ban’s execution through relevant authorities.

The session stressed the urgency of finalizing all food safety rules, improving coordination among authorities and stakeholders for effective enforcement, and completing the national food product registration system (ZAD). This includes refining food and feed registration processes and oversight.
