Karachi Announces Two-Month Ban on Kite Flying

Karachi Commissioner Muhammad Saleem Rajput has announced a two-month ban on kite-flying to protect citizens from dangerous incidents involving metal strings. This ban, enforced under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, prohibits the production, sale, and use of kites in the city from March 30 to May 29. The decision comes after several citizens suffered injuries due to accidents caused by kite strings, which pose significant risks to safety.

The commissioner emphasized that kite-flying can be extremely hazardous and the ban aims to safeguard citizens’ lives. The city government hopes that this measure will reduce such incidents and ensure residents’ safety.

Recent incidents in Karachi illustrate the dangers of kite-flying. A young man named Awais was hospitalized after being severely injured by a loose kite string while riding a motorcycle in Azizabad. Similarly, a minor boy was injured in Nazimabad under similar circumstances.

In response to such tragedies, the Punjab police have also intensified their crackdown on kite-flying across the province. The death of a young man in Faisalabad due to kite string injuries prompted Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take action against the production, sale, and purchase of chemicals used to make such strings, which are sharp enough to cause fatal injuries.
