Israel’s foreign minister criticized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, accusing him of violating agreements by halting Israeli imports and exports through Turkish ports. The minister likened Erdogan’s actions to those of a dictator, disregarding both the Turkish people’s interests and international trade pacts.
Israel’s response involves seeking alternative trade routes, emphasizing local production and imports from other nations. Reports indicate Turkey has indeed ceased all trade activities with Israel, though Turkish officials have not commented on the matter.
In 2023, the trade between Israel and Turkey amounted to $6.8 billion. Turkey’s recent trade restrictions on Israel stem from disagreements over Gaza aid operations and Israeli military actions in the region.
While Erdogan previously suggested a reduction in trade with Israel, he did not confirm a complete halt. This ambiguity contrasts with Israel’s stance, which perceives Turkey’s actions as a breach of trade agreements and an unfair disregard for mutual economic interests.
