KARACHI – Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan Ameer, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, has called for a nationwide ‘peaceful’ shutter-down strike scheduled for August 28.
The announcement was made during a press conference at the JI headquarters, Idara Noore Haq, in Karachi.
During his address, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman expressed disappointment in other opposition parties, criticizing their indecision regarding protests against the government. He firmly stated that JI would not align with any political alliances due to the prevailing confusion, reiterating that the party’s primary allegiance remains with the youth and people of Pakistan.
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman also underscored JI’s commitment to holding the government accountable, particularly concerning an earlier agreement made with the party. He voiced concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab and highlighted the financial struggles faced by 74 percent of Pakistanis. He warned that the lack of opportunities is driving many young people to consider leaving the country.
In his critique of the government’s economic policies, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman condemned the expensive RLNG agreements, claiming they have severely damaged the economy. He also warned that Independent Power Producers (IPPs) might take legal action on an international scale if their contracts are breached.
Further criticizing the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), he argued that its interference could have a detrimental impact on exports. Additionally, he pointed out that border smuggling is costing Pakistan an estimated 250 billion rupees annually. Hafiz Naeemur Rehman assured that JI would continue to pressure the government to implement the agreement in full.
The announcement of JI’s strike coincides with a nationwide strike already declared by the traders’ community for August 28. This strike is in protest against the Tajir Dost scheme introduced by the FBR. The All Pakistan Anjuman-e-Tajiran, along with various traders’ associations, has demanded the withdrawal of the scheme, a reversal of heavy taxes on the export sector, and an increase in income tax slabs for both salaried individuals and businessmen.
As the country braces for August 28, all eyes will be on the government’s response to these growing protests and demands.
