ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has launched an official inquiry into the circulation of an artificial intelligence (AI)-edited photograph depicting Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz alongside United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The probe was initiated following the widespread distribution of the doctored image on various social media platforms.
The AI-manipulated photo emerged shortly after a genuine meeting between Maryam Nawaz, UAE President Sheikh Mohammed, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the UAE leader’s recent visit to Pakistan.
The FIA alleges that this doctored photograph was part of a deliberate smear campaign aimed at defaming both Maryam Nawaz and the UAE President.
According to the FIA, a list of social media accounts implicated in the dissemination of the altered image has been compiled, and teams have been formed to identify and investigate the individuals responsible.
The agency asserts that the use of AI technology to create the image represents a malicious attempt to mislead the public and tarnish the reputations of both leaders.
The incident comes after some online criticism of Maryam Nawaz for shaking hands with the UAE President. However, the FIA emphasized that the use of an AI-edited image is a clear escalation of the online criticism into a deliberate effort to create a false narrative and damage relationships.
Maryam Nawaz’s special assistant had previously shared a photograph of the meeting on X (formerly Twitter), which included Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
This genuine photograph contrasted sharply with the circulated AI-manipulated image that appeared later, which fueled debate and misinformation on the various social media platforms.
