Met Department issues Heatwave alert for Karachi

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (Met Department) has issued a Heatwave alert for Karachi starting 17 May to 22 May, 2020 when temperatures are likely to reach 42 degrees Celsius.

Daytime temperatures will remain around 40 to 42 degrees Celsius as hot winds will blow from the Northwest desert areas however, temperatures are likely to drop during the evening as wind current shifts towards the Southwest.

Heatwave in Karachi is especially difficult during this time as people are fasting during this Holy Month of Ramazan therefore, doctors always advice to take precautionary measures and stay indoors during the day.

Shoppers are likely to be more at risk due to this heatwave as retailers are only allowed to operate during the day as the coronavirus lockdown measures have been eased. Since this will be the last week of Ramazan, many people will be out shopping for Eid-ul-Fitr.

Heatwave is common in Karachi and the city experiences several of them each year. Few years back in 2015, almost 1,200 people lost their lives to due heatstroke in the summer.

How to stay safe during a heatwave?

  • Dress for the weather (wear loose fitting and light clothing).
  • Avoid exerting yourself outdoor during the day and plan most activities when the sun has gone down.
  • Remember to stay hydrated (drink lots of water).
  • Keep yourself cool by trying to stick to the shade. Don’t stay in the sun for too long.
  • Always keep your head covered while outside.
