Dr Shireen Mazari took to Twitter saying that the Domestic Violence (Protection and Prevention) Bill 2020 was prepared by the Ministry of Human Rights (MOHR) and approved by the Committee for Disposal of Ligislative Cases (CCLC). The bill is being presented today in the on-going National Assembly (NA) session.

Furthermore, she mentioned that the Senior Citizens Bill was tabled in the National Assembly before the coronavirus pandemic will be expedited.

There has been an alarming increase in domestic violence and abuse cases in Pakistan since the start of the coronavirus lockdown. These include young girls who end up being tortured to death by their husbands or beaten up for reasons out of their own control.

Take the example of Yumna Soomro, a young wife who was beaten, tortured and then killed by her own husband because she gave birth to a baby girl when the husband wanted a boy. She was killed over something that nobody has any control over.

Another incident involves Hadiqa, a pregnant teenage wife who became the victim of domestic violence and was tortured and beaten by her in-laws and then handed over to police being accused to stealing money.

Hadiqa was 7 months pregnant and badly tortured at home and whatever, the reason, it does not justify the treatment as we can clearly see the bruises and injuries from that torture.

It should also be mentioned here that an 8 year old domestic worker was tortured and beaten to death by her employers in Rawalpindi after she released some of their expensive parrots from their cage.

The parrots although being expensive does not justify the killing of an 8 year old girl.
