At least 39 deaths due to electrocution during Karachi rain: Edhi report

KARACHI: At least 39 people have died from electrocution during the Karachi rain spells since the start of the monsoon season according to report by Edhi Foundation.

According to the Edhi Foundation who released a report regarding the deaths resulting from electrocution during the Karachi rain spells, at least 26 people died during the month of July and 13 people lost their lives due to electrocution in August.

Karachi police has started gathering contact information of victims’ families and seeking if they want to file a First Information Report (FIR).

In related news, Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered murder cases to be registered against K-Electric (KE) for the deaths that occurred due to electrocution during the monsoon season.

In a hearing today, Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed also ordered that K-Electric Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Monis Alvi be placed on the Exit Control List (ECL).

He further instructed NEPRA to take notice of any unscheduled loadshedding in Karachi and said that a detailed audit should be done into the company.

The Karachi rain spells this monsoon season have not only resulted in several deaths but also disrupted the lives of the residents due to poor preparation by not only K-Electric but also other concerned authorities which has resulted in the port city being flooded with water and damaged worth millions to private property.
