Emma Stone clinched her second Academy Award on Sunday, winning the best actress prize for her performance in the quirky comedy “Poor Things.”
Looking emotional and a bit flustered, Stone began her speech by revealing that her light green strapless dress had torn in the back during the event.
“My dress is broken. I think it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken.’ I’m pretty sure,” she quipped, referring to Ryan Gosling’s funny act at the ceremony featuring the Oscar-nominated song from “Barbie.”
“This is really overwhelming. My voice is also a little gone. Whatever,” she added. The 35-year old actress went on to express her gratitude to her fellow nominees, cast members, and family
Stone, who had won an Oscar in 2016 for her role in the musical “La La Land,” portrayed Bella Baxter in “Poor Things.” Bella was a woman who was brought back to life by a mad scientist (played by Willem Dafoe) in a story that was inspired by Frankenstein
The movie follows Bella in a journey of self-discovery and liberation, especially through her relationships, first with a flamboyant lawyer portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, and later on with various clients of a brothel located in Paris back in the 19th century Europe.
Stone has described the role as her favorite of her career, admiring Bella’s curiosity and her ability to appreciate both the good and the bad.
In “La La Land,” Stone showcased her singing and dancing skills as a struggling actress opposite Gosling, celebrating the essence of old Hollywood. She had also received nominations for best supporting actress for her roles in the 2014 film “Birdman” and the 2018 drama “The Favourite.”
Widely recognized for her red hair and expressive eyes, Stone first gained attention with her role in the 2007 comedy “Superbad.” She went on to star in notable films such as “The Help” and “The Amazing Spider-Man.” “Poor Things” was distributed by Searchlight Pictures, a subsidiary of Walt Disney.
