In a shocking incident that highlights Mexico’s ongoing crisis of gender-based violence, 23-year-old TikTok influencer Valeria Marquez was brutally murdered while live streaming from her beauty salon in Guadalajara.
According to the Jalisco state prosecutor’s office, an armed man entered her establishment in Zapopan suburb and opened fire, cutting short the young content creator’s life mid-broadcast. – BBC Reports
Tragic Final Moments Captured on Live Stream
Moments before the attack, Marquez appeared cheerful on camera, holding a stuffed animal during her TikTok session. The horrifying footage abruptly ended when another person grabbed her phone after gunshots rang out. Local media reports suggest the attacker posed as a delivery person bringing a gift before pulling the trigger. Authorities confirmed her death at the scene around 6:30 PM local time but have not yet identified any suspects.
While the motive remains unclear, prosecutors are treating the case as a femicide – a gender-motivated killing that reflects Mexico’s epidemic of violence against women. Zapopan Mayor Juan José Frangie confirmed no prior protection requests from Marquez, stating through AFP that “a femicide is the worst thing” a community can face. Forensic teams are currently analyzing evidence from the crime scene.
The young influencer, who amassed nearly 76100 followers across TikTok and Instagram, inspired an outpouring of grief from devastated fans. Her tragic death underscores the alarming statistics from UN reports showing 10 Mexican women or girls fall victim to gender-based murders daily, often at the hands of partners or relatives.

This brutal killing occurs against Mexico’s disturbing backdrop of femicides, which have surged in recent years despite government promises to address the crisis. As investigators work to unravel the circumstances behind Marquez’s murder, women’s rights activists emphasize the urgent need for stronger protections against gender violence in a country where such tragedies have become tragically routine.
The case has reignited national conversations about digital creators’ safety and the government’s failure to curb femicide rates that continue to claim countless lives across Mexico.
