Nepra Approves Another Electricity Tariff Hike

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has given approval for a rise in the cost of electricity tariff by Rs7.0562 per unit for March, which will affect everyone except electric car charging stations and low-income consumers. This move is expected to increase the burden on consumers by about Rs56 billion, potentially reaching Rs66 billion with added taxes.

This increase is due to a rise in fuel charges, with the government allowing power companies to add extra charges to customers’ bills. The increase applies to all types of consumers, except for electric vehicle charging stations and those who use minimal electricity.

There was a request for a higher increase from the power purchasing agency, but Nepra approved a slightly lower amount. The power companies had asked for the increase due to issues like decreased hydropower production and problems with transmitting power efficiently.

Critics are concerned about the high increase in fuel costs reported earlier for January 2024. In response, Nepra has decided to investigate why the fuel costs have risen so much, as claimed by the power purchasing agency.
