NEPRA Approves Rs1.15 Increase in Electricity Tariff

The decision, communicated through a notification from the regulatory authority, is a response to the monthly fuel adjustment for the first quarter of the current financial year. Consumers are now expected to make additional payments on their electricity bills for the period spanning January to March 2024.

This rise in the electricity tariff is anticipated to place an additional financial burden of Rs22.297 billion on power consumers. Notably, the increase is applicable across all consumer categories, excluding lifeline consumers and users of K-Electric.

Earlier today, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) submitted an application to NEPRA, advocating for a more substantial increase of Rs4.66 per unit. Acting on behalf of power distribution companies (DISCOs), the CPPA has urged NEPRA to endorse this hike under the Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) for November 2023.

In its application, the CPPA disclosed that the total electricity generated from various fuels in February 2023 amounted to 7.22 billion at a basket price of Rs9.44 per unit. It is noteworthy that on December 6, NEPRA had already raised the electricity tariff by Rs3.07 per unit as part of the monthly fuel adjustment, with exemptions for lifeline and K-Electric consumers.
