Pakistan to carry out 50,000 coronavirus tests per day: NDMA Chairman

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will start conducting 50,000 coronavirus tests per day starting next week according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lt. Gen. Muhammad Afzal.

A meeting was held at the National Command and Operations Centers where it was decided that coronavirus testing kits would be provided to all concerned departments in the country, the NDMA chairman told journalists.

Until now, coronavirus tests are only performed on people showing symptoms but now randomized testing will also take place.

According to the chairman Pakistan had a total of 800,000 testing kids and was working on procuring more and these will be distributed across provinces accordingly along with the medical consignment from China consisting of 59 ventilators, 936kg of surgical masks, 1720kg of unstitched cloth for surgical gowns, protective suits, safety lenses and thermometers.

A team of Chinese doctors also arrived in Pakistan on Friday to help the country fight the coronavirus pandemic and according to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the doctors will help Pakistan with their expertise in “treating infectious diseases”.
