Punjab Caps (Atta) Flour Price [Notification]

The Punjab government has taken a bold step to control flour (atta) prices, particularly focusing on wheat and its products. Here’s a breakdown of the recent changes:

  1. New price controls:
    • The Director of Food Punjab set maximum prices for wheat and flour in all 38 districts.
    • This uses powers from the new Punjab Price Control of Essential Commodities Act, 2024.
    • The rules start right away and will stay until changed or canceled.
  2. Wheat pricing:
    • A 40-kg bag of local wheat will cost between Rs2,800 to Rs3,050, depending on the district.
    • Sellers can’t charge more than these set prices.
  3. Flour pricing:
    • Whole wheat flour (atta) prices are capped at Rs900 for 10 kg and Rs1,800 for 20 kg.
    • Fortified wheat flour prices vary by district:
      • 10 kg bags: Rs820 to Rs920
      • 20 kg bags: Rs1,620 to Rs1,840
  4. Packaging rules:
    • Flour bags must be labeled with:
      • Product name
      • Miller/manufacturer details
      • Ingredients
      • Trademark
      • Weight
      • Batch number
      • Manufacturing and expiry dates
  5. Mixed reactions:
    • Some flour mill owners, like Majid Abdullah and Khaliq Arshad, aren’t happy.
    • They think setting prices for private wheat goes against free-market principles.

This move shows the government’s attempt to keep staple food affordable, but it’s stirring up debate about market interference.
