Sohrab Goth Protest In Karachi Turns Violent

The protest at Sohrab Goth in Karachi turned violent as a man was shot dead and several vehicles with commuting families were set on fire and ransacked by protestors, who gathered on the Superhighway after the killing of man named Bilal Kaka in Hyderabad.

The murder of Bilal Kaka allegedly by Pashtuns of Afghan origin had triggered a strong reaction as several people shut down shops and demanded the expulsion of Afghan refugees from the province. The incident also resulted in hundreds of protestors coming out and blocking Superhighway at Al-Asif Square in Sohrab Goth on Thursday.

However, the protest turned violent as protestors starting attacking police pickets and vehicles with commuting families. As a result, a heavy contingent of Rangers and police reached the spot to control the situation, taking 25 people into custody and clearing the Superhighway after negotiations failed to disperse the protestors peacefully.

Sindh Chief Minister, Murad Ali Shah, has also urged people who have taken law into their own hands not to pollute the peace of the city. “I know how to protect the peace and people of this province,” he said and asked protestors to behave otherwise they will face serious consequences.

The Murder of Bilal Kaka

According to the details, Bilal Kaka and his friends were having tea a restaurant when they had an argument with the waiter and approached the owner, Haji Shah Sarwar. However, the situation worsened and fight ensued with Bilal Kala being attacked by a barbeque skewer and received fatal injury.

He was pronounced dead on arrive at Liaquat University Hospital and his brother Salam Kaka registered a First Information Report (FIR) against four individuals, including the restaurant owner, Shah Sarwar, at Bhittai Nagar Police Station in Hyderabad.

The alleged suspect was arrested and presented by the police before a judicial magistrate in Hyderabad and the court had sent the suspect on a seven day judicial remand to jail. However, the killing has caused massive uproar in Sindh with protests breaking out at different places.
