Weather Update: Monsoon Rains, Thunderstorms Expected Nationwide This Week

Weather Update: According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, widespread weather changes are expected across the country as moist currents are currently penetrating the upper and central regions, with intensification likely in the coming days.

A significant westerly wave is forecast to approach northern areas on June 25 and become more prominent by June 26. This will bring rain, wind, and thunderstorms across Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Sindh. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in areas such as Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar, Swat, and Karachi, starting from June 24 through early July.

These weather patterns could lead to flash floods, urban flooding, and potential landslides in hilly regions.

The Met Office warns that cities like Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Peshawar may face urban flooding, while hilly regions including Murree, Galliyat, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are at risk of landslides. Farmers are advised to plan their agricultural activities carefully, and travelers are urged to remain alert and adjust their plans accordingly. T

According to the Met Office, moist currents are penetrating the upper and central parts of the country and are likely to become intensified in the next couple of days. A westerly wave is expected to approach upper parts on 25th June and is likely to become significant on 26th June. Under the influence of these meteorological conditions.

Regional Weather Forecast:

1. Kashmir/Gilgit-Baltistan

  • Kashmir (Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur)
    Rain, wind, and thunderstorms with scattered heavy to very heavy falls are expected from June 24 (evening/night) to July 2 with occasional gaps.
  • Gilgit-Baltistan (Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar)
    Rain and thunderstorms are expected from June 26 to June 29 with occasional gaps.

2. Punjab/Islamabad

  • Upper & Central Punjab, Islamabad
    Rain, wind, and thundershowers with scattered heavy to very heavy falls are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, Faisalabad, Okara, Kasur, Khushab, Sargodha, Bhakkar, and Mianwali from June 25 to July 1.
  • Southern Punjab
    Rain and thundershowers are expected in Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, D.G. Khan, Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Rahimyar Khan, and Layyah from June 26 to June 28.

3. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

  • Entire KP Region
    Rain, wind, and thunderstorms with scattered heavy to very heavy falls are expected in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Bajaur, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Bannu, D.I. Khan, Mohmand, Khyber, Waziristan, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, Hangu, and Kurram from June 25 to July 1.

4. Balochistan

  • Northeastern & Southern Areas
    Rain and thunderstorms are expected in Sherani, Musakhel, Loralai, Sibbi, Barkhan, Naseerabad, Kalat, Lasbella, Khuzdar, Awaran, Jaffarabad, Dera Bugti, and Kohlu from the night of June 25 to June 28.

5. Sindh

  • Upper and Southeastern Sindh
    Rain and thunderstorms are expected in Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Khairpur, Kashmore, Hyderabad, Tharparkar, Mirpur Khas, Sanghar, Jamshoro, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Thatta, Badin, and Karachi from June 25 to June 28 with occasional gaps.

Possible Impacts and Public Advisory:

  • Flash Flood Risk:
    Heavy rains may cause flash flooding in local streams/nullahs of Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Nowshera, Swabi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, hill torrents of D.G. Khan, Northeast Punjab, and Kashmir from June 26 to July 1.
  • Urban Flooding Threat:
    Possible urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera, and Peshawar from June 26 to July 1.
    Also possible in Hyderabad and Karachi from June 26 to June 28.
  • Landslide Hazard:
    Landslides may occur, leading to road closures in vulnerable hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan during the forecast period.
  • Structural Damage Warning:
    Strong winds and lightning may damage weak structures (e.g., kacha houses, electric poles, billboards, solar panels, and vehicles).
  • Advisory for Farmers:
    Farmers should plan agricultural activities in light of the forecast to avoid losses.
  • Advisory for Tourists and Travelers:
    During the wet spell, exercise extra caution, refrain from needless travel, and stay informed to prevent any unfortunate situations.
