Th Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz, has announced the launch of free WiFi service across 50 spots/locations in Lahore. The ambitious pilot project aims to enhance internet access for residents of the provincial capital, with plans to include other cities in the near future.
The decision to start a free WiFi pilot project was made during a high-level meeting between the Chief Minister and officials from the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) last month. Under the initiative, the PITB has been tasked with upgrading the current infrastructure, like hotspots, to enable smooth internet connectivity for residents.
CM Maryam Nawaz has also directed PITB to focus on giving free WiFi at important spots like schools, airports, train stations, and bus stops. Around 516 spots in Lahore will get this, making internet easier to reach for people.
This project brings back free WiFi, which was first started by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government after they came into power in 2013. The service was discontinued by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government because of unpaid bills. However, CM Maryam Nawaz aims not only to bring back the free internet but to provide better services as well.
