Google’s Pixel 8 and 8 Pro are quite similar in terms of hardware, except for the difference in RAM capacity. However, there’s some disappointing news for Pixel 8 users. Google has announced that the standard Pixel 8 won’t be receiving the Gemini Nano, the smallest version of the company’s AI model announced last December. This comes as a letdown for Pixel 8 owners who were anticipating having the mobile-friendly LLM on their devices.
In a recent episode of The Android Show on the Android Developers channel, Terence Zhang, a developer relations engineer at Google, confirmed the absence of Gemini Nano on the Pixel 8, due to hardware limitations. The primary difference between the standard and Pro variants of the Pixel 8 is the RAM capacity, with the former packing 8GB and the latter 12GB.
Gemini Nano is available on the Pixel 8 Pro and the Galaxy S24 series, offering features like summarization in the Recorder app, Smart Reply in Gboard and WhatsApp, and photography enhancements without needing an internet connection. The absence of this AI model on the standard Pixel 8 has widened the gap between the two variants. If you were planning to buy the simple Pixel 8 because of the Gemini Nano feature, this is something you should keep in mind.
Google further added that it plans to roll out Gemini Nano for more high-end devices and its partnership with chipmaker MediaTek to support Gemini Nano on Dimensity 9300 and 8300 chips. Furthermore, the company declared that it was going to make it possible to integrate Gemini into Android smartphones beginning in the year 2025.
