The Microsoft Build Developer’s Conference mainly focused on all things AI, but the company also made announcements in other areas, including the addition of Native RAR support for Windows 11 users.

After 28 years, Microsoft is finally adding RAR support directly into Windows, ending the need for third-party apps like WinRAR, which offers a 40-day trial that is basically unlimited and never expires.

According to the details, this is an open-source solution powered by the multi-format libarchive project and it will only offer native RAR support, but the ability to handle additional formats like Tar, 7-Zip, GZ, and more.

However, the company is yet to announce an official date for the release for the new feature, but Windows 11 is likely to get RAR support over the next couple of days. Although, it is still unclear whether the RAR support is going to be added to Windows 10.
